Dental Implantology Today

Dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular option to replace missing teeth. Often the first choice and a standard of care compared to other options to restore missing or damaged teeth. They can be used to replace single or multiple teeth and can also be used to add stability to dentures. Over 95% of modern implants can last for many years with the correct care.

Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, implant-supported bridges or dentures. They can also be used as anchorage for orthodontic tooth movement. The use of dental implants permits undirectional tooth movement without reciprocal action.

What are the options for implant tooth replacement?
Single Tooth Replacement: Immediately (at the same time an implant is placed) or after a period of healing, an abutment is attached to the implant. This is a device that “abuts” or joins the implant to a tooth form called a crown, which replaces the tooth part you see in the mouth. It will hold a custom-made crown that the dental laboratory will fabricate and match to your existing teeth. The custom crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment to permanently keep it in place. Once the crown is in place, it should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Fixed Multiple Tooth Replacement: As with single tooth replacement, temporary healing caps or abutments may be placed on multiple implants until the healing phase is complete. After healing, permanent abutments are attached to the implants. They can attach to custom-made crowns or bridgework that a dental laboratory will fabricate to match your existing teeth. In the final step, the custom bridge, which will replace multiple teeth, is cemented or screwed onto the abutments. The teeth have been replaced without disturbing the healthy teeth next to them, and bone loss has been halted.

Basic procedure
In its most basic form, the placement of an implant requires a preparation into the bone using either hand osteotomes or precision drills with highly regulated speed to prevent burning or pressure necrosis of the bone. After a variable amount of time to allow the bone to grow on to the surface of the implant (osseointegration), a crown or crowns can be placed on the implant. Unlike conventional dental implants, Mini dental implants may be loaded immediately and still have a high survival rate (94%).The amount of time required to place an implant will vary depending on the experience of the practitioner, the quality and quantity of the bone and the difficulty of the individual situation.

Am i suitable fro dental implants?
If you have good general health, or a well controlled medical condition, it is possible to undergo implant treatment.

However, habits such as excessive drinking or smoking can affect the short and long term success of your implant treatment, so naturally I would discourage this if you are interested in treatment. It is also widely advised that implants should be placed in a healthy and stable mouth. So before implant treatment the treatment of gum disease, repair of decayed teeth and elimination of abscesses are essential for successful implant treatment.

If you are unsure about the current health of your mouth do not worry, as all implant patients are given an initial extensive consultation to determine suitability for treatment.

How will the implant process affect me on a day to day basis?
Although there may be some minor pain and discomfort during the procedure, the overall process is relatively pain free and patients can find themselves able to resume their normal eating habits shortly after treatment.

Nevertheless, implants do require maintenance. It is important to practice good daily oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing to control bacterial biofilm. It is also important to see your dentist and dental hygienist. Special instruments are necessary to clean dental implants that will not damage their metal surface beneath the gum tissues. Your dentist will need to monitor your implants to make sure the integrity of the osseointegration is stable, and that the implant crowns, bridgework or dentures are functioning adequately.
